Angela Makris

Employed in marketing communications for over 23 years. Including long engagements within the European Union and Australia’s public and private sector. A versatile marketing and communications background, including, but not limited to health, not-for-profit marketing, multicultural, recruitment and social marketing. A highly motivated, disciplined and strategic integrated campaign and communications marketer, passionate about the end to end customer experience with senior-management capabilities. The recipient of two multicultural marketing awards in 1999 and in 2003.Ability to make a difference and improve bottom line results. 

Dr Ariadne Kapetanaki

Lecturer in marketing at the University of York

Dr Ariadne Beatrice Kapetanaki is a lecturer in marketing at the University of York, United Kingdom. She has a PhD in social marketing and food policy from City University London, UK. Ariadne's research focuses on food policies and systems that effectively prevent and tackle nutrition-related non-communicable diseases; social marketing for behaviour and social change in relation to healthy eating and alcohol consumption and critical marketing. Her research projects have been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy of Management, the Food Standards Agency and the Food Standards Scotland. Ariadne is a fellow of the Lancet Commission on Obesity and section editor of BMC Public Health.

Dr David McElroy

ESMA Board Member & Senior Policy Manager, Marine Stewardship Council

David has come to behaviour change and social marketing from the world of marine ecology. His ultimate goal is in using scientific research to create real solutions to environmental problems. He wants to show people that they can sustainably use and conserve our natural and cultural heritage, even in the face of daunting global challenges.

Dr Diogo Veríssimo

ESMA Board Member & Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Oxford Martin School, Oxford University

Diogo Veríssimo, is a behaviour change specialist with 15 years of experience in the fields of social marketing and community-based conservation. Diogo is a global leader in the design and evaluation of interventions to change environmentally relevant human behaviours, having authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

Diogo holds a PhD in Biodiversity Management, from the University of Kent, UK, where he explored the links between marketing theory and practice and biodiversity conservation. In 2016, Diogo was recognized by the IUCN Commission of Education & Communication with their Young Professional Award and in 2017 by the Society for Conservation Biology, with their Early Career Conservationist Award.

At the Oxford Martin School, Diogo will focus his work on the design and evaluation of behaviour change interventions to influence consumers of wildlife products, with the goal of mitigating the impact these products have on biodiversity.

Dr Nadina Luca

ESMA Board Member & Lecturer in Marketing, University of York

Dr Nadina Luca is a lecturer in marketing at the York Management School. Her research is interdisciplinary drawing upon social marketing, sociology of health and service scholarship.

She has collaborated with the NHS and local authorities on Smokefree and wellbeing programmes and is the administrative officer of the European Social Marketing Association. Current research interests include value co-creation, networks, food wellbeing and consumer vulnerability.

Drs Julie Huibregtsen

ESMA Board Member & Huibregtsen Sociale Marketing

Julie Huibregtsen has spent a lot of her professional time making social marketing more known and accessible in the Netherlands. Therefore she was very proud to welcome the second European Social Marketing Conference to her country, the Netherlands, in the city of Rotterdam, where it all started in 2008. As an ESMA Board member and member of the ESMC 2016 committee, Julie has been working hard to make this the third European Social Marketing conference a great success.

As a Social marketing expert for the Netherlands, Julie Huibregtsen has extensive experience in social marketing and project management. She has strong national and international networks and supports Dutch organizations in the application of social marketing. Her mission is to help professionals with their behavioral goals: “…all professionals I advise face the same challenges; get through to their target audience effectively and having to ‘sell’ their products succesfully. As their trainer and coach it always hits me how much professionals impose on themselves. It’s my mission to ease and enlighten their daily work”

L. Suzanne Suggs, PhD, MS, CHES

ESMA Board Member & Associate Professor of Social Marketing, University of Lugano, Switzerland

L. Suzanne Suggs is Associate Professor of Social Marketing and Head of the BeCHANGE Research Group in the Institute for Public Communication, Faculty of Communication Sciences, at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano Switzerland. She is also Director of the USI Sustainability Incubator (USI-SINC). She received a BBA in Marketing at University of North Texas (USA), a MSc and PhD in Health Studies at Texas Woman’s University (USA), and a Post-doctoral fellowship focused on healthy ageing and clinical decision-making at McMaster University (Canada). Suzanne’s research focuses on social and behavior change and information and communication technologies (ICTs). She examines the determinants of behavior (personal, cultural, policy and environmental), develops and tests the effects of communication strategies, delivered through ICT, on such behaviors. Her work is published in some of the leading health communication, social marketing, e-health and health policy journals. She spoke at the World Economic Forum about smart choices in health communication and will lead a session and policy report on the topic of communicating complexity in health at the upcoming World Innovation Summit for Health in Qatar. She is a Co-Founder and on the Executive Board of the European Social Marketing Association, on the Steering Committee of the Geneva Health Forum (2014), and is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Health Communication. She teaches graduate level courses in Social Marketing, Focus Group Methods, Research Methods, and Media Skills at USI, Basel, Bern and Zurich.

Leonidas Skerletopoulos

Head of Evros Chamber Marketing  and International Projects, Thessaloniki, Founder of Mindspark

Leonidas is a Social Marketing professional  certified by the University of Brighton with proven experience and strong academic background in Marketing and Communications. Furthermore,  Leonidas is actively involved in the development and promotion of the field in Greece through events as keynote speaker, organizer, trainer and occasionally guest lecturer in Social Marketing, Marketing and entrepreneurship. At present serves as Head of Evros Chamber Marketing  and International projects department with experience in the design and implementation of E.U. co-funded programs aiming to develop the regional entrepreneurial eco-system and has worked with many non-profit organizations. He was a U.K. alumni awards finalist in Greece for 2019 and the founder of the Mindspark initiative, an initiative aiming to promote growth mindset in Greece expressed through events focused on marketing and creativity. Closing Leonidas is National Rep of the European Social Marketing Association and member of the co-ordinators of the International Social Marketing Αssociation (Events Calendar Research & Social Marketing Guide). Leonidas current research interests are social marketing & behavior change, sustainable & social entrepreneurship, the application of social marketing in the traditional economy sector, corporate social marketing as a mean to social change. 

Professor Jeff French

ESMA Board Member, CEO Strategic Social Marketing, Emeritus Professor Kings College London & Brighton University

Jeff French is a recognised global leader in the application of behaviour change and social marketing. Jeff has extensive experience of developing leading and evaluating behaviour change projects, social marketing programmes and the development of communication strategies at international, national, regional and local level.

With over 30 years experience at the interface between government, public, private and NGO sectors Jeff has a broad practical and theoretical understanding of national and international health and social development issues.

Jeff and has published over 70 chapters, articles and books in the fields of behaviour change, social marketing, community development, health promotion and communications. Jeff is a visiting professor at Brunel University and Brighton University and a Fellow at Kings College University London and teaches at four other Universities in the UK.

Jeff was the Director of Communication and Policy at the Health Development Agency for five years from 2000 – 2005. In March 2005 From July 2006 through to July 2009 Jeff set up and managed the National Social Marketing Centre for England. In August 2009 Jeff became the Chief Executive of Strategic Social Marketing Ltd.

Strategic Social Marketing works with clients from all over the world in the private, NGO and public sector on the development and evaluation of social behaviour change programmes. Strategic Social Marketing also provides consultancy services to some of the world’s biggest corporate communications and research companies.

Jeff continues to act as the principle adviser to the National Social Marketing Centre and the Department of Health behaviour Change and Social Marketing policy team. Jeff also acts as an advisor to a number of national policy committees, the EUCDC Knowledge and Resource Centre in Health Communication project, and is a member of the organising committee of the Global Social Marketer’s network. Jeff is a member of the editorial Boards of the International Review on Public and Nonprofit Marketing and the Journal of Social Marketing.

Jeff is Conference Chair of the World Social Marketing Conference. His new book ‘Social Marketing and Public Health Theory and Practice’, published by Oxford University Press is now available. Jeff is also the author of the NSMC’s new guide to procuring and managing the delivery of social marketing service.

Rita Brophy

ESMA Board Member & Head of Qualitative Research, SMS Market Research Ltd

Rita is a social marketing professional specialising in strategic insight to inform, design and deliver user-centred behavioural change programmes.

A passionate advocate of the benefits of embedding social marketing in social policy, Rita travels into the heart of communities in order to fully engage with people from various target audiences to identify their situations, hopes and aspirations and work with them to create public-centred services that meet their needs.

Rita has been a board member of the European Social Marketing Association since January 2018 and is delighted to be part of the committee for ESMA’s 2020 conference.
